It wouldn't be all fun and games though since Baja can be an incredibly challenging environment. Even though a paved two-lane "highway" runs the 1,000 mile length of Baja, the peninsula is laced with dirt and gravel roads that provide merciless challenges to even the best equipped four wheel drive machines. After all, Baja California is the land of the grueling Baja 1000 desert off road race. Even though the guidebooks had differing opinions on many aspects of Baja, they were unanimous with their ominous warnings of the dangers when traveling off of the paved highway.
