In the summer of 1996, I was passionately climbing 14,000-foot peaks in Colorado every weekend. For my summer finale, I had scheduled a late September climb of 14,410 foot Mount Rainier with the hope that this would prepare me for even greater climbs. While I had climbed over two dozen 14,000 foot peaks in Colorado, Mount Rainier would be my first glacier climb. Most of the peaks I had climbed in Colorado required an elevation gain of 3,000-4,000 feet. Starting at the Paradise Inn, climbing Mount Rainier would require a 9,000-foot elevation gain - almost 2 vertical miles.
