Since I had no experience with glacier travel, I signed up with Rainier Mountaineering Incorporated (RMI), the leading guide service on Mount Rainier for a guided trip up the mountain. This was not a trip to be taken lightly. Since Rainier first was climbed in 1870, 78 climbers have died attempting to reach the summit, and Mount Rainier is the site of the deadliest mountaineering accident in North America - an ice avalanche that killed 10 climbers and one guide in June of 1981.
