| In the bunkhouse, the night before I would begin my summit attempt, I was engrossed in Lou Whittaker's book Memoirs of a Mountain Guide. I had come to the chapter describing the1981 avalanche that had killed 11 people on the exact same climb I was going to begin the next morning. I was somewhat startled to learn that a 22-year-old Peter Whittaker was one of the guides on that ill-fated climb. It was disconcerting to think about the 11 dead climbers that were still buried under tons of ice near the route that I would be climbing tomorrow. | |
