| Two EarthRoamers make their way out of Camp 1 on the snow covered mud bog. |
|
True to the weather forecast, we awake the next morning to blowing snow and an additional accumulation of three to four inches. As we break camp, the wind and snowfall intensifies. I'm not too concerned about the snow accumulation, but with temperatures fluctuating near freezing, we may run into snow covered ice conditions. Add in low visibility due to fog and blowing snow along with snow covered trackless roads and we are facing whiteout conditions. Ron, an EarthRoamer XV-LT owner, reports that he picked up a local TV broadcast over breakfast and that Interstate 70 through the Colorado Rockies has been closed. Clearly (pun intended) it was time to get off the Mesa. After a quick driver's meeting to announce our plans, we begin the caravan out the snow covered mud bog back to the main road. One by one, EarthRoamer XV-LTs bounce and grind their way through the bog in 4WD low range back to the snow covered main road where ear-to-ear grins are once again in abundance. After the last vehicle clears the mud bog, the caravan regroups and begins the trip to the visitor's center in near white-out conditions. |
