Why a Utility Bed?
I decided to go with a utility bed to provide a more solid foundation for the relatively fragile Four Wheel pop-up camper, and to regain space wasted by the stock truck bed. The added outdoor storage worked well for storing camping gear, tools, barbecue grill, roll-up table and folding chairs. Setting up camp was fast and easy with everything readily accessible.
Diamond Truck Body
Diamond Truck Body worked with me to build a truck bed to match the exact dimensions of my camper and was the only manufacturer I found who would build to my dimensions. I drove to California to pick it up and have it installed. It took about 8 hours to remove my bed and camper, install the utility bed and reinstall the camper. The overall quality is excellent, and John Riate the salesman was very friendly and helpful.
Pros
The quality and construction of the bed is first rate. High quality stainless steel latches are used, the boxes are sealed and reasonably waterproof, and the fit and finish is good. One unanticipated benefit of the utility bed was a noticeable decrease in road noise. I think the stock bed acts much like a big drum and magnifies road noise.
Even with the cut-outs to fit the camper, the utility bed has a great deal of storage space. The boxes each lock individually, and there is also a slide lock on each side that locks three doors at once providing double locking.
Cons
Cost and weight are the only drawbacks to mating a utility bed to a camper. I didn't weigh the bed, but it is very heavy, and I would guess it at about 1,000 lbs. Others have expressed a concern about the boxes being vulnerable to break-ins and theft, but I never experienced this problem and feel that the boxes are as secure as anything on the truck.

December 15, 2000 Update!
I sold my utility bed to Dave and Sue Fritz for use on Sue's new 2001 Dodge Ram. They now have 2 Diamond Truck Body utility beds, so I would suggest contacting Dave if you have any questions about utility beds.
