Overview
A good quality air horn is a good investment in safety. The factory horn isn't very loud, and the horn button on the steering wheel on my Ram takes a considerable amount of force to blow the horn.
Grover Air Horns
Grover makes high quality chrome plated brass air horns that are used on the big rigs. After visiting the Grover factory in California, I purchased and installed a set of their horns. I managed to squeeze them into the engine compartment, and they have an attention getting deep "big rig" sound. When I had a Powerline alternator installed, the Grover horns no longer fit. They are about 2 feet long, and I just can't seem to find a good mounting location for them, so I will be replacing them with plastic Hella horns.
Hella Horns
The Hella horn has a lower pitch, but actually sounds much louder. I will use the small compressor supplied with the horn so that the horn will be operational even if my main air tank does not have pressure. This will also simplify the plumbing on my auxilary air system. I will probably install the Hella horns inside the front bumper, and install a horn button in the camper in addition to the horn button I already installed on the dash in the cab.
